As long as I can remember I've had a desire to share the strange, wonderful, and confusing things that catch my eye - to grab my companion by the arm, point, and say, "Look at that! Do you see? Do you get it?"
At first I thought I'd be a writer, but soon discovered that I was not going to reinvent the American Novel. I needed another way to share how I saw the world.
Photography had been with me all along. Growing up in the New Jersey suburbs of Philadelphia, I documented adventures with my buddies and processed the film at the one-hour lab where I worked. With access to cheap processing, I was free to experiment and shoot as much as I pleased. In college I started working in professional portrait studios and darkrooms while taking photography classes and working on my English degree.
When it came time to graduate I had years of practical experience as a photographer and, well, an English degree. The choice was clear, and looking back, I couldn't have made a better decision. The last few years have been the best ever for me professionally. Clients have responded to my work with assignments that make the best use of my ability as a natural observer and storyteller. Turns out that English degree came in pretty handy after all.
Of all the work that is on this site, I feel the strongest about the Wrestler Project. In shooting that work I learned that I'm a documentarian at heart and that images don't have to be perfectly styled or technically perfect to be powerful, in fact often the opposite is true. Those pictures are all genuine moments that tell a story. That's what I really want to do - for myself and for my clients.
